Meyer Jean-Luc Estate

Located in the heart of the vineyards, 5 km south of Colmar, the estate’s vines stretch over   10 hectares (24,7 acres) around the village of Eguisheim, the birthplace of the Alsace vineyards.

The farm buildings are located on the edge of the old town of Eguisheim and include a cellar dated 1735, housing wooden casks. More recent buildings shelter the press house and the storage cellar.

Handed down from father to son over several generations, this concern is now managed by Jean-Luc and Louise who took over from Ernest, the father.

The annual production is approximately 70,000 bottles and includes three appellations :

 - Alsace : 7 grape varieties and Vendanges Tardives

 - Alsace Grand Crus : Pfersigberg and Eichberg

 - Crémant d'Alsace

The wine-making process is carried out according to traditional methods and the grapes are picked and sorted by hand.

The wines are sold on the spot and dispatched to various destinations. The French market represents 70% of our sales and 30% are dispatched to Belgium, Holland, Denmark, England and the United States.

Terroir and Climate

The MEYER vineyards stretch over the sub-Vosgian foothills.  Sheltered from oceanic influence by the Vosges Mountains, the vineyards are blessed with a semi-continental climate which is sunny, hot and dry (under 500 mm rainfall per year) and which favors excellent ripening of the grapes.

The month of September, with its warm days and cool nights enables slow ripening of the grapes and this develops the aromatic expression which is typical of such grape varieties.

Three types of terroirs

 - The foot of the slopes, composed of loess, silt and clay produce lighter, floral and very fine wines.

 - The chalky soil which lies on limestone ground called « Muschelkalk ». The soil which covers these limestone blocks contains pebbles which are detached from the mother rock, as well as clay and silt. The « Persigberg », a slope with Grand Cru status, located west of the village facing south, is an example of this type of soil which produces extremely fine wines.

 - Slightly chalky soils. This soil is composed of clay, sand and a mass of very hard, fallen, Triassic sandstone rocks which lie on a layer of very hard clay. The « Eichberg » which has Grand Cru status is composed of this kind of soil. These soils resist drought. They produce wines with great character and body, with slightly exotic aromas.
